Yep you know what question, can we make money in this new world of podcasting. This question is on the mind of almost every podcaster I know. Money, how things can change when money gets in the van. I am not in this for the money, although it would be nice. Chuck and I do our podcast every week because we enjoy it. It lets us flex our creative muscle. Would it be nice to keep doing it and not have to work our regular jobs, is that even a question you need to ask, of course.
Below are brief answers to some of the questions posed by Chris at chrisborgan.com.
Do You Want to Make a Living From This?
I think we covered this one already. If you want to help us make a living, well, you can contact me any time of the day. I am always up for a chat.
How Good is Your Product?
This is a question I ask myself time and time again. Have we written a good show, will it be as good as the last or the ones that came before it? I also think, will people other than my mother want to watch and why will they watch. This of course leads to the other questions like, who, what, how, and when. Let’s leave some of those questions for another time.
Chris does bullets point questions– here are my answers.
- It must be entertaining – I think it is, I laugh at myself every week.
- It must provide the best possible quality – Chuck and I try something new each week, to improve upon the quality. If you are not trying you are dying?
- It must be informative – Show the young and old alike what’s out there to watch. Yes informative.
- It must add value to me – YES! Ok maybe it depends on what you value. If you think staring at my hair for 8 minutes adds value, then you and I are on the same page.
How does our show stack up – this a stacked question, I pass.
Who’s Your Audience? How Are You Reaching Them?
Each week I receive a couple of emails saying this person or that can’t download the show. Which always frustrates me. I think to myself, here are people, our audience, and they want to see the show, but can’t. My poor aunt is stuck most weeks looking at a blank screen, she can’t figure out how to use the Internet. So have we found our Audience, yes, are we reaching them, yes!
Where is the problem? Delivery. I like to blame fangled technology on this one. The technology of delivery, it is not perfect and it hurts our viewer ship each week. Technology is only partly to blame though; in the end it comes down to our ability to provide content worth the watch.
- File size versus download speed. – Don’t get me started.
- Software versions – There are different versions? Don’t get me started.
- Weird words like “wiki” and “podcast” and “podcatcher” and “rss” that don’t translate well for moms – I have my podcast/rss speech down. No wiki yet, let’s not make their eyes go cross.
- Poor directories, or difficult navigation of what’s new- Yes and yes.
Money Changes Everything
If big media takes over this new way of distributing content it will be TV all over again. The greatest thing about our show is our ability to do a show the way we want, every week. It is true freedom. If NBC were here, it would be a bad sitcom. Oh who am I kidding; we would not be on the air.
Lastly, You Feel It, Right?
Chris, I feel it. I only had the pleasure of attending PME a couple of weeks ago. That experience changed my whole perspective on the world of Podcasting. I know both Chuck and I returned with a renewed outlook not just for our show but also on everything podcasting. Chris, I think you said it best, “waiting to be activated for something larger”; I know exactly how you feel.

See Chris Brogan for the whole story.
Brogan is blogging, vlogging and posting like a mad man. Here is yet another piece from the PME. If you look close you will see chuck, chris and me kicking it.
